Everything is Marketing. Everything.

We live in a branded world. I'm not going to get into a debate about the ethics of that fact, I just think it's an undeniable part of the modern world and of our culture that everything; from the way we speak, the way we dress, the way we act and the places we go, is labelled in exactly the same way that Louis Vuitton bag you like is.

You can be hipster, gangsta, preppy or posh, you can be rich or poor, you can be 'English' or 'Australian' or 'American'. Every single part of your personality has a label and contributes to your personal brand.

How To Turn Dreams Into Reality

All men dream; but not equally.
- T.E. Lawrence

We all envision some perfect lifestyle. Maybe we're rockstars, maybe we're CEOs, maybe we're pro sportspeople. When we're kids we eagerly tell the whole world about our dreams; one week we're going to be a fireman, the next week we're going to be a vet. When I was seven I wanted to be a pirate.

Somewhere along the line though our dreams get smaller. We start dreaming of how great it would be if we could quit our jobs, or get a new car, or be done with this boring meeting/class/seminar.

Everyone Knows You Hate Your Job

We've all met people who shine. The sort of people who tell you about their day and literally burst with excitement about what they're doing. Usually we don't share their enthusiasm for the field they are in, but we can't help but get sucked up in their positivity. Well, it works both ways.

Your bad mood puts people in a bad mood

When the person behind the counter has a sour face, is impolite or is evidently bored, it makes our day a little worse. It's like getting cut off on the freeway by someone with an obnoxious number-plate and a cheap spoiler.

Everyone Is Uncreative And So Are You

It's so easy to go with the status quo. No matter what you're doing all you have to do is look around, see how everyone else is doing it, then copy them. Maybe you add a touch of individualistic flair and tell yourself you're different, but you're not really different.

It's gotten so bad that “nothing is original” is pretty much an aphorism. Thank you Jim Jarmusch.

Consumer Culture is One Big Mousetrap – You're the Mouse

You better go check that blog you read, because that product you love just got made obsolete by another product with one more feature! Quick, buy it now before it's uncool!

I'm in the marketing industry. My entire function as a copywriter is to make you want things more than you want the corresponding amount of money. The entire industry is based off trying to get you excited enough to swipe your card – that's it.

Don't Hire a “Specialised” Copywriter, Hire a Good Copywriter

So, you're looking for a copywriter. Maybe it's for your corporate financial services company, maybe it's for the small jewellery business you run out of your bedroom – either way it would be better to hire a “specialised” copywriter, right? Surely a “financial services copywriter” can produce more suitable copy than “just a copywriter”, right? Surely a “small business copywriter” has expertise far beyond that of “just a copywriter” when it comes to writing for small businesses, right? Wrong.

4 Things Jay-Z and Kanye West Can Teach Marketers

Marketers and rappers actually have a lot in common. For one, they both enjoy talking about how great they are but there are more things rappers do well that marketers could learn from, especially world-famous, super-successful rappers like Jay-Z and Kanye West.

5 Copywriting Mistakes Everyone Makes

When I tell people what I do I get a mixture of responses - some think I write the little copyright statements at the bottom of websites, others think I copy down what clients dictate to me and neither of those tasks are really anything like my actual job.

The trouble is that because a lot of people have never heard of copywriting they don't think to hire a copywriter when they end up writing their website or designing a poster for their business. After all, writing is easy, right?

Why Not to Use Pinterest for Your Business

Do you design beautiful sculptures? Or do you cook award-winning culinary masterpieces? Or, by any chance, do you contribute to the latest fashion trends?

If you answered yes to any of the above questions, you can stop reading here. If, on the other hand, your business isn't in the habit of creating visually appealing products that people want to stare at - keep reading.

Why is Trademark Registration Important for Your Small Business?

You may have heard the term ‘trademark’ and you might be aware that to protect a trademark it needs to be formally registered. You might even recall that when you registered your first business name there was small print to advise you that the business names office accepts no liability in the event your chosen business name infringes a registered trademark.
It is especially important for small business owners to protect their trademarks through formal registration. Why?
